March 2020, and we landed in Kyiv which would allow us to tour Chernobyl and Pripyat. Either side of the tour we had the chance to explore Kyiv and we were not disappointed.
It is an unusual place and a real throwback to the 'Iron Curtain' communist era, I personally found it fascinating.
We used a couple of local guides to get us around, that worked out well because it is a very large city and local knowledge is essential to make the most your limited time.
If you ever get the chance to go, I recommend trying Georgian cuisine which is fantastic and very reasonable. Ukrainian wine isn't quite so good so stick with the beer!
It is certainly worth adding a couple of nights to any Chernobyl trip so that you can get a flavour for Kyiv, and if you do stay here then there are some great places on Air BNB.
